Why You Should Never Use Zodiac Signs to Decide Who To Date

When it comes to love and relationships, we’re always looking for ways to understand our partners better and find that perfect match. One popular approach is to examine love compatibility by zodiac sign.

The idea is that our astrological signs can provide insights into our personality traits, communication styles, and overall romantic compatibility. But does zodiac-based love compatibility actually hold water?

Or is it just a bunch of hocus pocus? Let’s take a closer look at what the stars have to say about finding your perfect partner.

What is Zodiac Sign Compatibility?

Zodiac sign compatibility is the belief that certain astrological signs are more compatible with others when it comes to love and relationships. The 12 zodiac signs are each associated with unique personality traits, strengths, weaknesses, and preferred ways of relating to others.

The theory goes that when two people’s signs are well-matched, they’ll naturally have an easier time understanding each other, communicating effectively, and creating a harmonious partnership. On the other hand, signs that are considered incompatible may struggle to see eye-to-eye and often clash in their relationship.

Some of the most common zodiac compatibility pairings include:

  • Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) with other Fire signs or Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)
  • Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) with other Earth signs or Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)
  • Water signs with other Water signs or Earth signs

The idea is that complementary elements (Fire with Air, Earth with Water) tend to work well together, while the same elements (Fire with Fire, Earth with Earth) can sometimes butt heads.

It’s Not About the Lack of Science

While zodiac sign compatibility is a popular concept, there’s no science behind it. Yep, gonna be honest about that.

In fact, in 2007, Dr. David Voas at the University of Manchester looked at 20 million birthdays of married couples and found no correlation between sun signs and who people actually married.

Okay, so you could argue a lot of them married the wrong people because they ignored the astrology. But I have never seen much correlation between zodiac and the happiest couples I’ve known, and there’s a reason for that.

I’ll tell you what I told clients in my own astrology practice years ago: you are so much more than your sun sign. Never try to use your sun sign to decide who to date.

Every person’s natal astrological chart has a sun, moon and rising sign, plus placements for the planets, and it’s all in a context of where things appear in the houses, and then you have to consider the conjunctions, squares, trines, opposites, and sextiles. Just because your sun signs do or don’t fit a theory of compatibility doesn’t mean something else in your chart won’t have a deeper impact on your actual experience of compatibility.

The Problem With Sun Sign Compatibility

I get it – sun sign compatibility is so easy and straightforward. You just look up your sign and your potential partner’s sign, check an online compatibility chart, and boom – you know if you’re destined to be together or heading for disaster, right?

The problem with this approach is that it oversimplifies the incredibly complex art of astrological compatibility. Your sun sign represents your core identity and the main themes of your life, but it’s just one of ten planets in your natal chart.

The other planets, placements, and aspects in your chart all play a crucial role in shaping who you are and how you relate to others.

For example, let’s say you’re a Scorpio sun. According to typical sun sign compatibility, you and a Taurus would make a great match.

But what if your Scorpio sun is in a difficult aspect to your Mars in Aquarius? Or your Venus is in Gemini? Suddenly, that Taurus partner who was supposed to be your perfect match might not feel like such a great fit after all.

The Importance of the Whole Natal Chart

To get a true, in-depth understanding of your astrological compatibility, you need to look at the whole natal chart – not just the sun signs. And a full, complete natal chart is not generally something most dates have on them when you meet them for coffee that first time after swiping right.

Admittedly, this makes astrology pretty unhelpful in figuring out who to date. But once you get into a relationship, you can certainly look at natal charts and try to figure out why some things in the relationship are working or not, and what to do about it.

Here are some of the key factors to consider:

Planets: Each planet in your chart represents a different aspect of your personality and how you express yourself. Your moon sign, for example, reveals your emotional nature and needs.

Your Venus sign shows how you approach love and romance. Analyzing how these planetary placements interact with your partner’s chart is crucial for compatibility.

Aspects: The angles, or “aspects,” between the planets in you and your partner’s charts also play a huge role. Harmonious, “easy” aspects like trines and sextiles can indicate natural compatibility and flow.

Challenging aspects like squares and oppositions can create tension and conflict, even if your sun signs are a great match.

House Placements: The houses in your natal chart represent different areas of your life. Where the planets fall in each of your houses can significantly impact how you interact with your partner and what parts of your life you prioritize together.

Synastry: This is the practice of comparing two people’s natal charts to analyze their astrological compatibility. By looking at how the planets, signs, and houses in your chart interact with your partner’s, you can get a much more nuanced and accurate picture of your romantic potential.

Real-Life Examples of Sun Sign vs. Whole Chart Compatibility

Let me give you a couple of fictional examples to illustrate my point:

Couple #1: Sarah is a Virgo and her partner, Tom, is a Pisces. On paper, these two sun signs are considered a challenging match – Virgo’s practical, analytical nature often clashes with Pisces’ dreamy, emotional style.

However, when we look at their full natal charts, the picture is much more complex. Sarah has a Sagittarius moon and a Libra Venus, which soften her Virgo intensity and make her more open-minded and romantic.

Tom, on the other hand, has an Aries moon and a Taurus Venus, grounding his Piscean tendencies and giving him a more assertive, sensual side.

The aspects between their charts are also quite harmonious, with Sarah’s Venus forming a lovely trine to Tom’s moon and Mars. This creates a natural flow and understanding between them, allowing them to navigate their differences with patience and compromise.

Couple #2: Alex is a Gemini and their partner, Jamie, is a Cancer. These two sun signs are often considered a great match, with the curious, intellectual Gemini balancing out the nurturing, emotional Cancer.

However, when we look at their full natal charts, the compatibility isn’t quite so clear-cut. Alex has a Scorpio moon and a Capricorn Venus, which can make them come across as more intense and guarded than the typical Gemini.

Jamie, meanwhile, has a Virgo moon and a Libra Venus, which gives them a more analytical, people-pleasing approach to relationships.

The challenging square aspect between Alex’s Venus and Jamie’s Venus creates tension and power struggles around intimacy and values. And with their moons also forming a tense square, their emotional needs and expressions can clash.

While they may have some surface-level compatibility, the deeper astrological factors suggest this couple may need to work a bit harder to find harmony and fulfillment together.

The Importance of Compatibility Beyond Sun Signs

The takeaway here is that you just can’t rely on sun sign compatibility. It’s just not the be-all and end-all of astrological compatibility.

To truly understand how you and a potential partner will vibe, you need to look at the whole picture – the planets, aspects, houses, and synastry between your charts.

I’ve seen too many people write off perfectly good matches because their sun signs weren’t “supposed” to be compatible. And on the flip side, I’ve witnessed sun sign “soulmates” struggle and ultimately part ways because the deeper astrological factors just weren’t there.

So before you swipe left on that Taurus or Scorpio because your horoscope says you’re not a match, I encourage you to dig a little deeper.

So What Can You Do?

Since it’s impractical to expect a full natal chart from every potential date, there’s a workaround. Get your own natal chart done. You can do this for free online.

Then learn how to read it, or consult with an astrologer who knows how. They can tell you how all the pieces work together and what it tells you about your own tendencies in relationships, and also what sort of things to look for in a romantic partner.
